BA Scottish History
About this course
Scottish history is the study of Scotland's distinctive historical development, from the early medieval period through the Reformation and the Covenanting conflicts, the Union of Parliaments in 1707, the Enlightenment, the Highland Clearances, industrialisation, and the political and cultural transformations of the modern period. Scotland's history is at once a subject in its own right and a way of understanding how a small nation has retained its distinctive culture and identity within a larger political union, an experience that raises questions of lasting significance about nationality, autonomy, and cultural change. At Stirling, this four-year full-time programme provides a grounding in Scottish history as both a national story and a component of the wider British, European, and Atlantic histories within which it is embedded. You will develop the historian's skills of critical reading, archival research, and analytical writing, studying the major periods and themes of Scottish history alongside the methods that historians use to reconstruct and interpret the past. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different historical and cultural context that broadens your perspective. The typical entry tariff is 168 points. Graduates of Scottish history programmes pursue careers in heritage, museums, archives, public policy, journalism, the civil service, teaching, and academic research. The deep knowledge of Scottish culture, politics, and society that the programme provides is valued in institutions and organisations engaged with Scotland's past and present, from Historic Environment Scotland to the Scottish Government and the BBC. Many graduates go on to postgraduate research in Scottish history, British and Irish history, or heritage management.
