About this course

Social work is one of the most socially important professions in the UK, working directly with some of the most vulnerable people in society, children at risk, adults with disabilities or mental health difficulties, older people, families in crisis and individuals affected by poverty, addiction or domestic abuse. Social workers assess need, manage risk, make difficult decisions and advocate for the rights and welfare of their clients, working within complex legal and ethical frameworks and often in emotionally demanding circumstances. A degree in social work is both an academic qualification and a professional training, leading directly to eligibility for registration with Social Work England. At Northumbria University in Newcastle, this three-year full-time programme combines academic study in social work theory, law, psychology and sociology with substantial assessed practice placements in social work settings. Newcastle and the North East provide a rich and varied set of practice environments, including children's services, adult social care, mental health, and voluntary sector organisations, all of which contribute to your professional training. The typical entry tariff is around 152 UCAS points. You will study the legal framework for social work practice in England, human development across the lifespan, social policy and welfare, communication skills and anti-oppressive practice, risk assessment and safeguarding, and the theories and methods that underpin effective social work intervention. Practice placements are a fundamental component of the programme, requiring you to apply your learning in real social work settings under the supervision of qualified practitioners. By the time you graduate you will have met the standards required for registration as a social worker. Graduates of social work degrees who register with Social Work England can practise as qualified social workers in statutory, voluntary and private sector settings across children's services, adult care, mental health, youth justice and community social work. Many graduates go on to specialise in areas such as children looked after, older people, substance misuse or learning disabilities. Senior practitioner, team manager and practice educator roles are available with experience. Postgraduate routes include practice education qualifications and master's programmes in social work, social policy or public health.
