BA Sociology and Law with Placement
About this course
Sociology and law is a combination that illuminates both disciplines. Law provides the formal framework of rules and institutions that regulates social life and resolves disputes. Sociology asks why those rules take the form they do, whose interests they serve, how they are experienced by different groups, and what role law plays in producing and reproducing social inequalities. Reading law sociologically and sociology legally produces a graduate with a more critical and complete understanding of both than either discipline offers alone. At the University of Gloucestershire, this four-year, full-time degree with a placement year develops both disciplines in parallel while also providing direct professional experience in a relevant setting. You will study the foundations of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, and constitutional law, alongside sociological theory, research methods, and applied topics such as crime, inequality, health, education, and social policy. The placement year gives you the opportunity to gain sustained professional experience in a legal, social research, social care, or public sector environment, developing your understanding of how both law and social practice work in professional contexts. The typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects an accessible approach to admissions. Sociology and law graduates enter careers in law (subject to further professional training), social research, the civil service, social work, public policy, probation, the voluntary sector, and community organisations. The combination is particularly well suited to roles in criminal justice, housing, welfare, equality and diversity, and the broad range of statutory and voluntary organisations working at the intersection of legal rights and social need. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in law, sociology, social policy, or criminology, or to professional training as solicitors or social workers.
