BSc Sociology
About this course
Sociology is the academic study of how human societies are organised, how they change, and how the structures and norms that shape social life are produced and maintained. It investigates the social forces behind inequality, power, culture, and identity, and it brings both theoretical depth and empirical rigour to understanding the patterns of social life that we often take for granted. The discipline has never been more relevant: the questions it addresses, about race, migration, digital life, social movements, and the persistence of inequality, are at the centre of contemporary political and cultural debate. The three-year full-time Sociology programme at Brunel University London engages you with the latest social and cultural challenges, taught by internationally leading academics who offer global perspectives on areas such as race and racism, politics, social inequalities, urban life, colonialism, social movements, migration, digital media, free speech, comedy, gender, and popular culture. The programme develops your ability to think sociologically, to research social questions with appropriate methods, and to communicate your findings to different audiences. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to experience sociology in a different national context and to develop the comparative perspective that comes from studying societies other than your own. With a typical entry tariff of 88 points, the programme is accessible and committed to widening participation. Graduates from sociology programmes pursue careers in the civil service, social work, community development, education, journalism, human resources, market research, policy, and the voluntary sector. The analytical and communication skills developed through the degree are highly transferable, and many graduates go on to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, or a related professional qualification.
