BA Sociology
About this course
Sociology asks some of the most searching questions about the world we inhabit together. What holds communities and institutions together, and what causes them to fracture? How do inequalities form, persist, and change? Why do people behave so differently depending on the social contexts they find themselves in? These questions have never been more pressing, and sociology provides the theoretical frameworks and research methods to approach them with rigour and clarity. At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time degree gives you a thorough grounding in the discipline, drawing on a department with a strong international research reputation. You will explore the major traditions in sociological theory, from the founding figures of the nineteenth century to contemporary debates about globalisation, identity, and digital society. Research methods receive serious attention throughout, and you will become confident in both quantitative approaches such as survey analysis and qualitative methods such as ethnography and interview-based research. Contemporary case studies ground the theory in real social phenomena, whether that means examining health inequalities, the dynamics of race and ethnicity, criminal justice, the sociology of education, or the organisation of work and labour markets. Essex's emphasis on empirical rigour means you will graduate not only with ideas but with the practical skills to investigate social questions independently. The typical entry tariff for this programme is 120 UCAS points. Sociology graduates are known for their ability to analyse complex situations, handle data, communicate ideas clearly to different audiences, and understand the structural forces behind human behaviour. These capabilities are valued across a remarkably wide range of fields, including social research and policy, public health, the civil service, journalism, NGOs, human resources, education, and social work. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in sociology, criminology, social policy, or related disciplines, and Essex offers strong pathways into research and academic careers for those who wish to pursue them.
