About this course

Sociology at Kent gives you the tools to understand how societies, communities, and organisations work, and how they can change. You explore some of the most pressing issues of our time, from inequality and discrimination to the impacts of digital technologies and global migration, through a contemporary and critical lens. Sociology treats what might seem like natural or inevitable social arrangements as objects of inquiry, asking who benefits from them, who is disadvantaged, and how they came to be the way they are. The University of Kent's sociology department is one of the most research-active and intellectually stimulating in the UK, with particular strengths in social theory, global sociology, digital society, and the intersecting dimensions of inequality. You will engage with the classical traditions of sociological thought, from Durkheim, Marx, and Weber to contemporary feminist, postcolonial, and critical race theorists, and you will develop the empirical research skills needed to investigate social phenomena with rigour. Qualitative and quantitative methods are both integral to the programme, and you will learn to choose and apply appropriate methods to the questions you are investigating. Kent's location, close to continental Europe, adds an international dimension to the intellectual environment that enriches the study of global social processes. This programme is offered on a part-time basis, making it accessible to students who are balancing study with work or other commitments. Graduates go on to careers in research, the civil service, social work, education, journalism, policy, community development, the third sector, and many other fields where sociological thinking and evidence-based analysis are directly valuable. The analytical capabilities and social awareness that sociology develops are genuinely transferable, and many graduates also pursue further postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, or related disciplines.
