About this course

Sociology and business and management bring together two disciplines that each shed light on how organisations work and how the social contexts in which they operate shape their possibilities and constraints. Sociology provides rigorous conceptual and empirical tools for understanding social structures, inequalities, cultural forces, identity and the dynamics of social change, asking how the social world is organised and who benefits from its current arrangements. Business and management examines how organisations are structured, how they compete, how they manage people and resources and how they create and capture value in markets. Together they provide a richer understanding of commercial life than either discipline alone could offer. At the University of Glasgow this four-year, full-time programme develops genuine depth in both disciplines, covering sociological theory, research methods and the major substantive areas of sociological inquiry alongside the core business and management subjects of strategy, finance, marketing, organisational behaviour and operations. You will engage with the social and political dimensions of commercial organisations, and with the organisational dimensions of social institutions and movements. The programme includes a year abroad, extending your intellectual and cultural experience internationally. Glasgow's research-intensive environment in both sociology and business provides an excellent academic context. Graduates pursue careers across business management, human resources, market research, public policy, community development, management consultancy, the voluntary sector, academic research and many other fields where the combination of social analysis and organisational understanding is valued. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in sociology, business, management, social research or related disciplines. The combination of sociological rigour and business knowledge is particularly valuable in organisations navigating complex social and cultural environments.
