About this course

Sociology and history at Glasgow is a part-time combination that brings together two disciplines whose insights into how human society is organised and how it changes over time are mutually enriching. The study of history is the study of change and continuity in human society through time. Glasgow offers a wide-ranging programme from medieval to modern times and across the globe, with teaching that draws on research expertise in Scottish, British, European, US, and global history, slavery studies, gender history, and war, intelligence, and genocide studies. Sociology examines the social structures, institutions, and cultural forces that shape contemporary life, developing both quantitative and qualitative research methods alongside critical social theory. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme allows you to develop both disciplines alongside existing work or other commitments, studying within one of the UK's leading research universities for both history and social science. You will engage with historical methods and historiographical debates alongside sociological theory and empirical research, developing the ability to construct well-evidenced arguments about both the past and the present. A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the opportunity to engage with history and sociology in an international educational context. The combination of historical depth and sociological rigour provides a strong foundation for careers in the civil service, journalism, education, policy research, the voluntary sector, community development, social research, heritage and museums, law, and many other analytical and public-facing roles. The part-time mode makes the degree particularly suitable for those already working who want to develop their analytical expertise alongside professional experience. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in history, sociology, social policy, or related disciplines.
