About this course

Spanish and Latin American studies combined with theology and religion brings together two disciplines that illuminate each other in distinctive and sometimes unexpected ways. Spanish opens access to one of the world's major language communities, spanning a vast Iberian and Latin American geography in which religion, especially Christianity, has played a central and complex role in political history, cultural identity, and social life from the Reconquista through colonialism to the liberation theology movements of the twentieth century. Theology and religion, as an academic discipline, examines the origins, development, meaning, and social function of religious traditions comparatively and critically, asking what religion is, how it works, and what it has meant to human beings across cultures and history. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time degree develops genuine depth in both areas. The Spanish and Latin American studies strand builds practical language competence to a high level alongside engagement with the literature, history, culture, and contemporary society of the Spanish-speaking world. The theology and religion component explores the major world religions comparatively, with a particular focus on Christian faith in its historical and contemporary forms, developing the skills of textual interpretation, philosophical argument, and historical analysis that the field demands. A year abroad is embedded in the programme, providing the opportunity to develop your Spanish through immersion in a Spanish-speaking country and academic environment. Graduates are prepared for careers in which the combination of language competence, cultural knowledge, and religious literacy is valued. Roles in international development, humanitarian organisations, cross-cultural communication, education, chaplaincy and pastoral care, journalism, and the civil service all draw naturally on this combination of expertise. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in Hispanic studies, theology, religious studies, missiology, or international development, using the degree's linguistic and theological foundations as a platform for specialist academic or professional careers.
