BA Spanish with Polish
About this course
Spanish is one of the world's great literary and cultural languages, with a rich tradition stretching from the medieval poetry of the Iberian Peninsula through the Golden Age of Cervantes and Lope de Vega to the modernist innovations of Latin American literature and the vibrant contemporary writing of Spain and the Americas. Polish, by contrast, is the largest Slavic language by native speaker count in the European Union, the language of a country whose history, literature, and political experience have been among the most dramatic and consequential in twentieth-century Europe. Studying these two languages together is an unusual and demanding combination that opens a genuinely wide cultural and intellectual world. At the University of Oxford, this four-year full-time programme reflects Oxford's position as one of the world's leading universities for the study of modern languages. The tutorial system means you receive intensive one-to-one and small-group teaching from leading academics, and the depth of engagement with both languages, their literatures, and their cultural contexts is exceptional. You will develop advanced proficiency in both Spanish and Polish, study literature from both traditions across historical periods, and engage with film, cultural theory, and the linguistic structures that make each language distinctive. The degree at Oxford typically involves significant time spent in countries where the languages are spoken, and the combination of Spanish-speaking and Polish-speaking worlds gives you access to an unusually varied set of academic and professional environments. Graduates of Spanish and Polish programmes at Oxford move into careers in translation and interpreting, diplomacy, European Union institutions, international business and finance, journalism, publishing, academia, and education. Oxford's tutorial system and the rigour of the degree develop analytical and writing skills that are valued across essentially every professional field.
