MA Spanish/Economics
About this course
Spanish and economics is a combination that prepares you for a genuinely globalised professional world. Spanish is spoken by around 500 million people across more than twenty countries, encompassing one of the world's largest and most diverse linguistic communities. Latin America, together with Spain, represents a significant share of global economic activity, and graduates who can engage with that world in Spanish and think rigorously about its economic structures and dynamics are in a distinctive position. At the University of Glasgow, staff cover a wide range of topics in Spanish studies and you will have the opportunity to work with native speakers from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world. The programme runs for five years full time, which reflects the dual demands of reaching high-level Spanish proficiency alongside a rigorous economics education. It includes a sandwich year and a work placement, providing direct professional experience in either a Spanish-speaking environment or an economics or business context. The typical entry tariff is 232 points, reflecting the high level of prior attainment and motivation that a programme combining two demanding disciplines at a leading university requires. You will develop high-level Spanish language skills and cultural knowledge alongside rigorous training in microeconomics and macroeconomics, quantitative methods, and economic theory. Glasgow's strong economics and modern languages departments together provide an excellent environment for this combination, and the placement year gives you experience of applying both skill sets in professional contexts. Graduates from Spanish and economics programmes move into careers in international business, economic consultancy, the civil service and diplomatic service, international organisations, journalism, financial services, and a range of roles in the Spanish-speaking world and in organisations with significant presence there. The combination of economic analysis and Spanish-language capability is relatively rare and genuinely sought after. Postgraduate study in economics, international relations, or a related field is another common next step.
