BSc Sport and Exercise Science
About this course
Sport and exercise science is the systematic application of scientific principles to human movement, physical performance and the relationship between exercise and health. It draws together physiology, biomechanics and psychology to understand how the body responds to exercise across a wide range of intensities and contexts, from the demands of elite athletic performance to the role of physical activity in managing chronic disease and promoting population health. The discipline is both intellectually rigorous and directly applicable, with graduates working in settings that range from high-performance sport to clinical healthcare and community health promotion. At the University of Kent, this three-year full-time programme explores how sport, exercise and physical activity affect the human body and its capabilities, studying core scientific areas including physiology, biomechanics and psychology while developing practical skills through laboratory sessions, applied projects and real-world tasks. You will engage with the science of athletic performance alongside the growing evidence base for the role of physical activity in health, developing both the technical analytical skills of a sport scientist and an understanding of how those skills can be applied across a range of professional contexts. Sport and exercise science graduates work across professional sport and performance, healthcare, fitness and leisure, and public health. Strength and conditioning coaches, sport scientists working with clubs and national governing bodies, physiological testers, exercise prescribers and performance analysts are all roles that draw on this training. The healthcare and clinical dimension of the degree also opens routes into exercise referral, cardiac rehabilitation, musculoskeletal physiotherapy assistant roles and public health projects. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in sport science, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, physiotherapy or public health, while others move into fitness industry management or coaching and performance roles.
