BSc Sport and Exercise Science (With Professional Practice Year)
About this course
Sport and exercise science applies the principles of physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition to understanding athletic performance and physical activity in support of health and wellbeing. It is a discipline that has grown significantly as professional sport has invested more heavily in evidence-based performance support and as public health organisations have recognised the importance of physical activity for disease prevention and mental wellbeing. At the University of Bedfordshire this four-year programme includes a professional practice year, extending the standard three-year degree with a dedicated period of applied professional experience. You will study the physiological responses to exercise, including cardiovascular and muscular adaptations to training, alongside biomechanical analysis of movement, the psychology of sport and performance, nutrition for sport and exercise and research methods that allow you to engage critically with the scientific literature and to conduct your own investigations. The professional practice year provides a substantial period of experience in a sport science or health and exercise setting, applying your academic knowledge in a real professional context under supervision. This extended practical exposure is one of the most significant differentiators in a field where employers value demonstrable applied competence alongside academic qualification. Graduates work in performance sport as sport scientists supporting elite athletes, in health and fitness as exercise physiologists, personal trainers and exercise professionals, in public health and community sport, in clinical exercise settings, in schools and in sport development organisations. Some go on to postgraduate study in sport science, strength and conditioning, physiotherapy or exercise physiology to deepen their expertise or to specialise in a particular area. Professional accreditation through bodies such as the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences is a common aspiration, and Bedfordshire's programme is designed with the requirements for professional recognition in mind.
