BSc Sport Coaching
About this course
Sport coaching is the professional discipline concerned with planning, delivering and evaluating coaching to develop athletes and support participation in sport. Effective coaching requires far more than technical knowledge of a sport: it involves understanding athlete psychology, learning and performance theory, athlete welfare, ethical responsibilities, communication skills and the ability to create environments in which people of different abilities and backgrounds can develop and flourish. At degree level, sport coaching examines these dimensions through an evidence-based academic framework that develops the reflective practice, analytical skill and professional judgement that coaching education demands. At Leeds Beckett University you will study sport coaching on a part-time basis, on a programme shaped by an established, globally recognised model of coaching that is accepted as an evidence-based framework for educating coaches by international and national governing bodies of sport. A sandwich year and the opportunity for a year abroad extend the programme with professional and international coaching experience, and work placement is integrated throughout, ensuring that your academic learning is continuously connected to real coaching contexts. The programme is designed for students who want to deepen their coaching knowledge and gain a degree qualification while maintaining their engagement with sport practice. Graduates work as coaches across a range of sports and settings, from community and grassroots programmes to high performance and elite sport environments. Many work as sports development officers, performance analysts, physical education teachers, strength and conditioning coaches or sports science practitioners alongside coaching roles. The global recognition of the coaching framework on which the Leeds Beckett programme is based is a significant asset for graduates who want to work in international sport, and the year abroad experience supports that international orientation. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in sports coaching, sports science or performance analysis, building on the evidence-based foundations of the degree.
