FdSc Sport, Health and Exercise
About this course
Sport, health, and exercise brings together three interconnected fields to address one of the most important challenges facing modern societies: how to help people move more, live better, and manage the health consequences of increasingly sedentary lifestyles. Exercise science examines how the human body responds to physical activity. Health studies situates this in the broader context of wellbeing, behaviour change, and the social and environmental factors that influence how people live. Sport provides a domain in which these principles come alive, whether in competitive performance, community participation, or rehabilitation. At the University of Suffolk, this two-year full-time degree was developed in direct response to skills shortages in the sports, health, lifestyle, and fitness industries, shaped by input from employers including health organisations and gyms. The programme reflects what the sector actually needs: graduates who understand both the science of the body and the practical realities of supporting people to be more active. You will study anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, nutrition, and health promotion, alongside practical skills in fitness instruction, coaching, and programme design. The two-year duration makes this an efficient route into the sector for students who are clear about the direction they want to take. You will develop the knowledge and practical skills to work directly with people in exercise and health settings, as well as the analytical foundation to understand evidence about what works and why. Graduates work as personal trainers, fitness instructors, health coaches, sport development officers, community exercise specialists, and in health promotion and leisure management roles. The degree is also a foundation for further study in sport and exercise science, physiotherapy, or sports medicine for those who want to develop specialist clinical or research expertise. The sector continues to grow as awareness of the health benefits of physical activity becomes more central to NHS and public health strategy.
