BSc Sport Science and Mathematics (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Sport science and mathematics is a combination that reflects the increasingly quantitative nature of modern sport, where performance analysis, statistical modelling and biomechanical measurement play a central role in understanding and improving athletic outcomes. Sport science applies biology, physiology, psychology and biomechanics to the study of human physical performance, while mathematics provides the rigorous analytical and statistical tools that allow that data to be interpreted meaningfully. Together they train students who can bring genuine mathematical rigour to questions about sport and physical performance. At Nottingham Trent University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation element that provides preparation in the underpinning sciences and mathematics before the main degree begins, making it well suited to students who wish to build their knowledge progressively before engaging with the more advanced material. You will study exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, research methods and data analysis alongside core mathematical topics including statistics, calculus, algebra and numerical methods, developing both subject area knowledge and the quantitative skills to work with sport performance data rigorously. Graduates work in performance sport organisations, sports analytics companies, elite and community coaching environments, sport science support services, health promotion and fitness. The mathematical and statistical skills the programme develops are also valued in data science roles more broadly, including market research, financial analysis and health data analytics. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in sport science, statistics, data science, sports analytics or a health-related field, developing expertise in a particular application of their combined skills.
