FdSc Sports Coaching and Development
About this course
Sports coaching and development is a discipline concerned with the planning, delivery, and evaluation of coaching practice, and with the broader role of sport in supporting individual and community wellbeing. Effective coaching requires both a thorough understanding of how athletes learn and develop and the communication, leadership, and reflective skills needed to support that development across different levels, from grassroots participation to elite competition. Sports development extends this focus to the social and organisational dimensions of sport, examining how access, engagement, and inclusion can be improved across communities. At Birmingham City University, this two-year full-time foundation degree is delivered across a distinctive set of facilities including Villa Park, Aston Villa Brookvale Inner City Academy, and Alexander Stadium, as well as BCU campuses, exposing you to state-of-the-art sport and development environments throughout your studies. You will develop coaching knowledge and skills across a range of sports and settings, studying sports science, coaching theory, pedagogy, athlete development, and the social and organisational context of sport. The programme prepares you for roles in coaching, sports development, and community sport, and the access to high-quality facilities and professional environments is a significant asset. Graduates go on to work as sports coaches, development officers, community sport coordinators, and programme managers across voluntary, community, and professional sport organisations. Many pursue further qualifications or progress to a full honours degree, using the foundation degree as a stepping stone to more advanced study in sport coaching, sports development, or physical education. The combination of practical coaching skills and understanding of sports development opens doors across the sport, leisure, and education sectors.
