BA Sports Journalism
About this course
Sports journalism sits at the intersection of two fields that command enormous public attention: sport, which generates passionate engagement from audiences all over the world, and journalism, which is responsible for telling stories accurately, fairly, and with the kind of depth and context that transforms a result into something genuinely meaningful. It is a discipline that requires both deep sporting knowledge and rigorous journalistic craft. At the University of Chester this three-year full-time programme develops your skills as a journalist through sport, giving you the practical training in writing, broadcasting, digital publishing, and media law that professional journalism requires, alongside a grounding in the sports industry, sporting culture, and the ethics of sports coverage. You will practise reporting, interviewing, and news writing across print, broadcast, and online formats, developing the versatility that is essential in the modern media landscape. The programme includes a year abroad, which places you in a different sports and media culture and extends your understanding of how sport is covered and consumed in different contexts. This international dimension is increasingly relevant in a sports journalism landscape where global events, international rights deals, and social media have made national borders less significant. Graduates go on to careers as sports journalists, reporters, correspondents, sports broadcasters, content producers, and social media editors for newspapers, broadcasters, digital publishers, sports clubs, governing bodies, and agencies. The combination of journalistic training, sporting knowledge, and international experience gives you a strong foundation in a competitive but rewarding field. Many graduates also go on to broader journalism careers, using the skills developed in the programme across other subject areas.
