About this course

Sports management is the discipline concerned with the organisation, leadership, and strategic direction of sport at every level, from community clubs and local authorities to professional sporting bodies, national governing organisations, and major events. Sport is a significant economic and social sector that requires professional management: financial planning, marketing, governance, facility management, event delivery, stakeholder relations, and an understanding of the regulatory and policy landscape in which sport operates. Effective sports managers understand both the commercial and social dimensions of their organisations. The University of the Highlands and Islands offers this programme on a part-time basis, which is particularly well suited to people who are already working in sport or leisure settings and want to develop their professional knowledge and qualifications alongside their employment. The UHI's distributed model, with centres across the Highlands and Islands, makes higher education accessible in communities where attending a traditional campus would not be practical. Across the programme you will study sports organisations and governance, sports marketing and sponsorship, event management, financial management for sport, sports development policy, and leadership and human resource management in sport contexts. The programme engages with both the commercial sport sector and the community and public sector sport and leisure industry, giving you a broad understanding of the management challenges across the full range of sporting contexts. Sports management develops organisational thinking, strategic awareness, and the communication and leadership skills that managers at every level of sport need. Graduates work in sports clubs, national governing bodies, leisure trusts, local authorities, sports event companies, sport development organisations, and sports marketing agencies. The management skills the degree develops are also transferable to broader leisure, events, and third sector management contexts.
