MEng Sports Technology
About this course
Sports technology is a discipline that combines the principles of sports science with engineering, design, and materials science to develop and improve the equipment, technology, and environments used in sport. From the aerodynamics of cycling helmets and the biomechanics of running shoes to the precision engineering of athletic wheelchairs and the data analytics that guide elite performance, sports technology is concerned with the application of scientific and engineering knowledge to sporting challenges. It is a field that requires both technical understanding and the ability to work with athletes, coaches, and performance organisations to deliver meaningful improvements. At Loughborough University this four-year full-time programme brings together the excellence of Loughborough's sports science and engineering traditions, one of the strongest combinations of its kind in the UK. You will study industrial design, human factors, materials engineering, and marketing within the specific context of sports equipment and elite sport, developing the technical and commercial understanding that careers in this field require. Loughborough's close relationships with elite sport organisations, national governing bodies, and the sports equipment industry mean that the programme is closely connected to real professional practice, and students benefit from access to outstanding facilities and a community of sport and technology expertise. Graduates from sports technology go on to careers in sports equipment design and development, performance technology, sports data analytics, equipment testing, and product management in companies ranging from small specialist manufacturers to major global sports brands. Elite sport organisations, national institutes of sport, and performance consultancies also employ sports technology graduates in roles focused on equipment optimisation and athlete performance. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in sports technology, engineering design, or biomechanics, deepening their specialist expertise and preparing for research or senior development roles.
