About this course

Strength and conditioning is the science-based practice of developing athletic physical qualities, including strength, power, speed, endurance and movement efficiency, to enhance sporting performance and reduce injury risk. It draws on exercise physiology, biomechanics, anatomy and the psychology of athletic development to inform the design and delivery of training programmes for athletes at all levels, from recreational participants to elite performers. The discipline has grown significantly in professional and amateur sport as the evidence base for physical preparation has become more sophisticated and the demand for qualified practitioners has increased. At the University of Bedfordshire this four-year programme, which includes a foundation year, develops your scientific knowledge and practical coaching skills across the full scope of strength and conditioning practice. You will study the physiological and biomechanical principles that underpin physical training, learning to assess athletes, design progressive training programmes, monitor load and recovery and evaluate the outcomes of your interventions. The foundation year provides a supportive entry point into degree-level study, building the scientific literacy and academic confidence you need before the main programme begins. Practical experience with athletes and in training environments is embedded throughout the degree, developing the applied skills alongside the theoretical foundation. Graduates work with professional and amateur sports clubs, national governing bodies, performance institutes, universities, schools and personal training businesses. Roles as strength and conditioning coaches, physical performance coaches and sport science support staff are among the most common destinations. Professional accreditation through the United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association is a standard aspiration for practitioners, and the degree provides the academic foundation for that pathway. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in strength and conditioning, sport science or exercise physiology to deepen their expertise or to move into research and academic roles.
