About this course

Sustainable architectural studies addresses the design of the built environment through the specific lens of environmental responsibility, examining how buildings and urban spaces can be designed, constructed and managed to reduce energy consumption, minimise carbon emissions, work with natural systems and create conditions for human health and flourishing that can be maintained across generations. As climate change makes the environmental performance of buildings one of the most urgent challenges facing the construction and design professions, the knowledge and skills developed through this field are increasingly central to professional practice across architecture, planning and the built environment. At the University of the Highlands and Islands this programme is studied part time, making it accessible to students who cannot attend campus full time, including those already working in the construction, design or environmental sectors. The Highlands and Islands context is itself relevant to many aspects of sustainable architectural study, with questions of remote and rural building, vernacular architecture, extreme weather performance and the relationship between built and natural environments particularly prominent in this setting. You will engage with passive design principles, energy modelling, sustainable materials, building physics, climate-responsive design, planning policy and the broader environmental frameworks within which sustainable design decisions are made. The programme develops both the technical understanding needed to design and evaluate sustainable buildings and the critical awareness of the social and political dimensions of sustainability in the built environment. Graduates from sustainable architectural studies programmes move into careers in architectural practice, building consultancy, environmental assessment, sustainability management, planning, property development and the public sector. Many also pursue further professional qualifications in architecture, building services engineering or environmental design, or postgraduate study in sustainable design, environmental management or urban planning.
