BA TESOL and French
About this course
TESOL, which stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, is one of the most globally significant educational disciplines, given that English functions as the world's primary language of international communication and that the demand for English language teaching continues to grow in every region of the world. Combining TESOL with French gives you professional qualifications and skills in two complementary directions: expertise in teaching language, and high-level proficiency in one of the major world languages, which deepens your understanding of how language learning actually works and opens an additional dimension of professional opportunity. At Manchester Metropolitan you will study the theory and practice of English language teaching alongside French language, literature, and culture. TESOL study covers linguistics, language acquisition, pedagogical methods, curriculum design, and the assessment of language learning, equipping you to teach English effectively across a wide range of cultural and institutional contexts. French study develops your proficiency in the language and your understanding of Francophone cultures and literatures, giving you a second language to work with professionally and a richer perspective on the experience of language learning itself. The four-year full-time programme provides the depth in both subjects to prepare you for careers in either area. Graduates go on to careers in English language teaching in schools, language schools, and higher education institutions around the world, as well as in teacher training, language curriculum development, and educational publishing. French proficiency adds further options in translation, cultural organisations, international business, and roles across Francophone contexts. Postgraduate study in linguistics, TESOL, or education is also a natural route for those who want to develop their expertise further.
