BA Textile Design
About this course
Textile design is one of the oldest and most technically diverse creative disciplines, concerned with how materials are manipulated through weave, knit, print, and embroidery to create surfaces, fabrics, and objects that are simultaneously functional and expressive. Textiles are central to fashion, interior design, product development, automotive interiors, film and television production, and an expanding field of material innovation, including smart textiles and sustainable material alternatives. Studying textile design develops a combination of technical craft skills, aesthetic judgement, and creative thinking that is applicable across this wide range of contexts. At Glasgow School of Art, this four-year full-time programme is taught in one of the UK's leading art and design schools. You will have the opportunity to study weave, knit, print, and embroidery before specialising in the areas that most engage you, developing both breadth and depth across the discipline. The programme is grounded in textile traditions while consistently challenging the discipline's boundaries, asking what textiles can be and do in the contemporary world. Responsible and sustainable design is a consistent thread throughout the curriculum, reflecting the growing importance of environmental thinking in creative practice. The programme aims to develop graduates with assured, specialist skills and individual creative identities, prepared for employment, self-employment, or postgraduate study. With a typical entry tariff of 184 UCAS points, this is a competitive programme at a prestigious art school. Textile design graduates work across fashion, interiors, product design, the automotive industry, film and television, trend forecasting, colour consultancy, and the growing field of material innovation. Many graduates establish independent studios or freelance practices. Teaching and arts education are also common paths. For those wishing to continue their studies, postgraduate programmes in textile design, material culture, or sustainable design are available.
