MA Theology & Religious Studies/English Language
About this course
Theology and Religious Studies, combined with English Language, is a degree that takes seriously both the inner life of belief and the linguistic structures through which religion is expressed, debated, and transmitted. Theology and Religious Studies is a broad field: it encompasses the academic study of sacred texts, religious traditions, moral philosophy, and the history of belief, and it engages with religion not as a private matter but as a force in politics, history, literature, philosophy, art, and culture. English Language adds a rigorous analytical dimension, focusing on how language works, how meaning is constructed, and how communication shapes thought and society. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the experience of studying in a different cultural and academic environment at some point in your degree. Glasgow is one of Scotland's leading research universities with strengths in both theology and linguistics, and the programme benefits from that scholarly depth. You will engage with Biblical studies, the history of Christianity and other world religions, ethical and philosophical theology, and the sociological and anthropological dimensions of religious practice. Alongside this, you will develop analytical competence in English Language, studying how texts communicate, how discourse operates in different contexts, and how language relates to identity and power. The combination creates a graduate who can read religious and cultural texts with both theological depth and linguistic precision. Graduates from this combination are well prepared for careers in education, social work, chaplaincy, community development, publishing, journalism, and the voluntary and charitable sector, particularly in organisations with a faith dimension. Many pursue postgraduate study in theology, religious studies, applied linguistics, or related disciplines. The analytical, communicative, and intercultural skills developed on the programme are also valued in public policy, HR, and international development roles.
