About this course

Theoretical physics is the branch of physics concerned with developing and applying mathematical frameworks to understand the fundamental laws that govern the natural world, from the smallest subatomic particles to the structure of the cosmos. It seeks the deepest explanations of physical phenomena, working at the frontier of human knowledge about space, time, matter and energy. The mathematical methods developed in theoretical physics have had transformative applications far beyond the discipline itself, contributing to advances in materials science, medical imaging, artificial intelligence and financial modelling. At the University of Leeds this four-year, full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study theoretical physics within a different international academic context, which broadens both your intellectual perspectives and your professional network. You will develop the mathematical rigour and physical intuition that theoretical physics demands, working through the fundamental theories of classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, special and general relativity and quantum field theory. The programme builds the ability to work with abstract ideas and complex mathematical structures, developing graduates who are as comfortable with elegant theoretical argument as with quantitative analysis. Theoretical physics graduates are among the most analytically capable of all science graduates, and their skills translate across an unusually wide range of careers. Finance and quantitative investment, data science, machine learning, software engineering, research and development in technology, aerospace, defence and energy are all common destinations alongside academic careers in physics and mathematics. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in theoretical or applied physics, mathematics, financial mathematics or a related field, and the combination of mathematical depth and physical understanding is particularly valued in quantitative roles across the financial and technology sectors.
