About this course
Theoretical physics is the branch of physics that seeks to understand the fundamental laws governing the universe through mathematical reasoning and conceptual analysis rather than primarily through experiment. It asks the deepest questions available to science: what is the nature of space and time, what are the elementary constituents of matter, how did the universe begin, and what are the limits of our knowledge? Since Einstein's theory of relativity and the development of quantum mechanics in the early twentieth century, theoretical physics has repeatedly overturned intuitive assumptions and revealed a universe stranger and more ordered than common experience suggests. At Royal Holloway, this four-year MSci in Theoretical Physics builds progressively from the core material that all physics graduates are expected to know towards the more advanced and mathematically demanding content that defines the theoretical approach. You will study classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, and relativity before moving into quantum field theory, general relativity, particle physics, and other specialist areas in the later years. The programme includes a placement year and a year abroad, as well as work placement experience, giving you substantial professional and international exposure alongside your academic study. The emphasis throughout is on developing mathematical fluency and the ability to construct and analyse theoretical models, going well beyond what is covered in standard physics curricula. Graduates from theoretical physics programmes are among the most versatile in the graduate market. The degree leads to careers in research, data science, quantitative finance, computing, engineering, and a wide range of analytical and technical roles. Many graduates continue to doctoral research in physics, applied mathematics, or related fields, while others move into technology, consultancy, or the financial sector, where the problem-solving and quantitative skills of a theoretical physicist are highly valued.
