About this course
Theoretical physics is the branch of physics that uses mathematical formalism to describe and predict how the physical world behaves, without necessarily requiring direct experimental work in a laboratory. It is where some of the deepest and most elegant ideas in science live: quantum mechanics, general relativity, statistical mechanics, quantum field theory, and the mathematics of symmetry and spacetime. Theoretical physicists develop the frameworks that experimental physicists test and that engineers and technologists eventually apply, and their work sits at the boundary of mathematics and physical understanding. At Queen's University of Belfast, this four-year undergraduate masters programme provides a solid grounding in all aspects of physics, both theoretical and experimental, with a significant amount of practical laboratory work replaced by lecture courses and project work specifically in theoretical areas. In the first two years you will build foundations across mechanics, applied mathematics, and computational physics, developing both the physical intuition and the mathematical fluency that deeper theoretical work demands. In the third and fourth years you will study in more depth in areas of particular theoretical interest, including quantum theory, electromagnetic theory, and advanced mathematical methods.
