About this course
Theoretical physics is the branch of physics that seeks to describe the natural world through mathematical frameworks rather than primarily through laboratory experiment. It works at the level of fundamental principles, constructing and testing the equations and models that explain phenomena ranging from the interactions of elementary particles to the evolution of the cosmos and the collective behaviour of matter in extreme conditions. It demands exceptional mathematical ability alongside physical intuition, and it represents one of the most intellectually demanding undergraduate programmes available. At the University of Sussex, this three-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, providing both a supported entry into degree-level study and extensive professional and international experience. The foundation year is designed for students who have the intellectual potential for theoretical physics but who need additional mathematical or scientific preparation before tackling the full curriculum. You will learn the methods of theoretical physics, including advanced mathematical techniques, and apply them to areas such as particle physics, cosmology, condensed-state physics, and atomic physics. Compared to more general physics programmes, you will spend less time on experimental techniques and more on the theoretical and mathematical apparatus that underlies our deepest understanding of nature. The sandwich and placement years allow you to experience how theoretical and applied physics skills are used in research or industry settings.
