BA Welsh,Philosophy, Ethics and Religion
About this course
Welsh language and the combined study of philosophy, ethics and religion offer a rich pairing that connects linguistic identity with some of the deepest questions about how human beings think, live and find meaning. Welsh is a living Celtic language with a continuous literary tradition stretching back well over a millennium, and studying it at degree level means engaging with that heritage while also developing fluency and the ability to use Welsh in contemporary professional and cultural contexts. Philosophy, ethics and religion, meanwhile, asks fundamental questions about knowledge, morality, the nature of reality and the role of faith in human experience. At Bangor University, this three-year programme gives you the opportunity to develop your Welsh language skills and your understanding of Welsh culture and literature alongside a broad grounding in philosophical and religious thought. The programme includes a foundation year for those who need additional preparation before entering the main degree, as well as a sandwich placement year that allows you to gain professional experience in a context relevant to your studies. Work placement is a feature of the programme, and a year abroad gives you the chance to study at a partner institution and extend your academic and personal horizons. Graduates from programmes combining Welsh with humanities disciplines are well positioned for careers in Welsh-medium education, public services, broadcasting, cultural organisations and government, where Welsh language skills are professionally valuable. The philosophical and ethical dimensions of the degree are also relevant to law, healthcare ethics, social work, journalism and public policy. Further study at postgraduate level in Welsh studies, philosophy, religious studies or related fields is a natural route for those with research or teaching ambitions.
