About this course
Zoology is the scientific study of animal life in all its extraordinary diversity and complexity. It engages with animals at every scale of biological organisation: from the molecular mechanisms of cell signalling and gene expression through the physiology of individual organisms to the behaviour of populations and the dynamics of ecosystems. Zoology is a discipline with both deep intellectual fascination and urgent practical relevance, as the accelerating loss of biodiversity and the disruption of natural systems make the work of understanding and protecting animal life more important than ever. At Manchester Metropolitan University, this three-year full-time degree covers a wide range of topics, examining the molecular biology, genetics, and physiology of animals while discovering how these areas have shaped animal evolution and behaviour. Systems biology is integrated into the programme, bringing together different levels of biological understanding into a coherent view of how animals function. A sandwich year is built into the degree, and work placement is available, giving you the opportunity to apply your zoological knowledge in a professional setting before your final year. Manchester's location provides access to one of the UK's great zoological collections and a rich professional environment for aspiring zoologists. You will develop laboratory and field skills alongside the theoretical understanding needed to interpret findings in evolutionary and ecological context. Research methods, data analysis, and scientific communication are developed throughout the degree. Graduates go on to work in conservation, wildlife management, environmental consultancy, zoos and aquariums, ecological research, veterinary support roles, and education. Many continue to postgraduate study in zoology, ecology, conservation biology, or a related life science field. The scientific skills and biological knowledge the degree develops are also valued in a range of environmental and healthcare-adjacent roles.
