BSc Zoology
About this course
Zoology at the University of Hull is taught with a commitment to learning that extends well beyond the lecture theatre, combining laboratory-based science with field-based teaching that places you in real ecological environments. The study of animals encompasses everything from molecular biology and physiology to population dynamics and ecosystem function, and the skills you develop as a zoologist, combining observation, experimentation, statistical analysis and ecological reasoning, are relevant to some of the most pressing challenges the natural world faces today. You will study for three years full-time, developing knowledge across the breadth of zoological science while also developing practical skills that employers and postgraduate programmes value. The field-based component of the programme is particularly important, training you to work in natural environments, collect and interpret ecological data, and understand animal communities in their real-world context. Hull's commitment to working across disciplinary boundaries reflects the reality that solving global environmental problems requires collaboration between ecologists, physiologists, geneticists, conservationists and social scientists. Zoology graduates from Hull work in conservation organisations, wildlife trusts, environmental consultancies, government agencies, zoos, aquaria and research institutions. Ecological survey and monitoring, species recovery work, biodiversity assessment and environmental impact analysis are all common career paths. Others move into science communication, education, broadcasting or nature-based tourism. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, animal behaviour, evolutionary biology or a related specialism, building on the broad scientific foundation the undergraduate degree provides. The combination of practical field skills and theoretical knowledge makes zoology graduates genuinely useful in the applied settings where knowledge of the natural world matters most.
