MSci Zoology (Undergraduate Masters)
About this course
Zoology is the scientific study of animals in all their extraordinary variety, from the simplest invertebrates to the most complex vertebrates, and from the molecular mechanisms that govern their cells to the ecological communities in which they live and interact. It is a discipline that spans an enormous range of scales and methods, and one that has never been more important: as biodiversity loss accelerates, as emerging infectious diseases reshape global health, and as new molecular techniques open up possibilities for conservation and scientific discovery that previous generations could not have imagined, zoologists are at the centre of some of the most consequential science of our time. At Queen's University Belfast, this four-year full-time MSci degree provides a comprehensive and advanced training in zoology at the undergraduate masters level. You will develop knowledge and understanding of concepts and theories spanning from the molecular and cellular through to the whole organism, studying the principles and biology of animals across all levels of organisation. The programme engages seriously with contemporary issues including zoonotic and emerging infectious diseases such as Covid-19, the application of molecular techniques such as cloning to de-extinction and conservation, and the use of forensics and toxicology in investigating wildlife crime. You will develop strong practical laboratory skills alongside the ability to design and carry out research, with quantitative data analysis and scientific communication forming central parts of your training. QUB's position as a research-active institution in the biosciences means you will encounter current research questions and methods throughout your degree. Graduates go on to careers in conservation, wildlife management, environmental consultancy, biomedical research, veterinary support, education, and the public sector. Many continue to postgraduate study at master's or doctoral level in zoology, ecology, conservation biology, or related fields. The integrated masters level qualification is particularly valuable for those pursuing research careers or specialist roles in the life sciences.
