Mental health nursing is one of the most demanding and rewarding branches of healthcare, concerned with supporting people who are experiencing conditions ranging from acute psychosis and severe depression to eating disorders, substance dependency, and personality difficulties. Mental health nurses work across inpatient wards, community teams, crisis services, and specialist units, providing therapeutic relationships, care planning, risk assessment, and advocacy for some of the most vulnerable people in society.

This three-year full-time degree at the University of Gloucestershire prepares you for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a mental health nurse. You will study the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of mental health and illness, developing your understanding of the evidence base that underpins contemporary care. Theory is integrated with substantial clinical practice throughout the programme, and you will gain experience working in real services, encountering the full range of presentations you are likely to meet as a qualified practitioner.

You will learn to use therapeutic communication skills, to conduct structured assessments, and to work within multidisciplinary teams that include psychiatrists, social workers, occupational therapists, and peer support workers.

On graduating, you will be eligible to register as a mental health nurse and practice in NHS trusts, independent healthcare providers, community services, and the voluntary sector. Mental health nursing offers structured routes to specialisation in areas such as forensic mental health, child and adolescent mental health, perinatal care, and substance misuse. Experienced nurses can progress into management, education, advanced clinical practice, or research roles.
