About this course

American studies is a genuinely interdisciplinary field that examines the history, literature, politics, and culture of the United States and its relationships with the wider world. To understand America is to engage with one of the most powerful and culturally pervasive nations in modern history, whose political choices, cultural exports, and economic dynamics have shaped the global order since the twentieth century. American studies approaches this through the methods of history, literary criticism, cultural studies, and political science, building a richly textured understanding that no single discipline could provide alone.

At Swansea University, this four-year programme with foundation year begins with additional academic preparation before the main degree content begins, ensuring a solid foundation for engaging with degree-level material across multiple disciplines. Through the degree proper, you will examine American history from colonisation through to the present, studying the political institutions, social movements, literary traditions, and cultural forms that have shaped American life. You will engage with questions of race, gender, class, immigration, and national identity that are central to understanding American society, and with America's role in global politics, culture, and economics.

Swansea's location in Wales, while geographically distant from the United States, offers the perspective of outside observers engaging critically with one of the most influential national cultures in the world, which is often exactly the perspective needed to see it clearly.

Graduates from American studies degrees move into careers in journalism, politics, education, cultural organisations, international relations, law, the civil service, and creative industries. The interdisciplinary skills the degree develops, including historical analysis, literary interpretation, and political understanding, are transferable across many professional contexts. Postgraduate study in American studies, history, politics, or cultural studies is a natural route for those who wish to develop further.

A great decision
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit oth…
