About this course

Applied Modern Languages and Translating with French and German is a programme that prepares you not only to speak and read two major European languages but to work professionally with them, particularly in the demanding and technically skilled area of translation. French is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used across Europe, Africa and international institutions, while German is the most widely spoken first language in the European Union and a language of immense cultural, scientific and economic significance. Together, they provide access to some of the richest literary and intellectual traditions in Western culture and to two of Europe's most important economies.

At Heriot-Watt University, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, giving you direct professional experience alongside your academic studies. You will develop high-level linguistic proficiency in both French and German through speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation practice, and you will learn to use the industry-standard technology that professional translators rely on in contemporary practice. The applied emphasis of the degree ensures that your language skills are developed in professional and real-world contexts throughout your studies, preparing you for the demands of language careers with a specificity that more traditional programmes cannot always match.

Graduates from Applied Modern Languages and Translating programmes go on to careers as professional translators, interpreters, localisers, language specialists in international business, journalists, diplomats, educators and communications professionals. The combination of French and German is particularly valued in European institutions, law firms with international practices, multinational corporations and NGOs. Postgraduate study in translation studies, interpreting or applied linguistics is a well-supported route for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue academic careers in the language professions.
