About this course

Art history and modern history together give you one of the richest possible approaches to the recent human past, combining the study of visual and material culture with the analysis of events, societies, and ideas as they have unfolded over the past two centuries. Art history teaches you to read images and objects as carefully as historians read documents, examining how works of art encode the values, anxieties, and aspirations of the societies that produced them and how their meanings have shifted as contexts have changed. Modern history provides the broader framework of events, movements, and transformations within which art and visual culture can be understood.

At St Andrews this four-year full-time programme develops both strands to a high level, giving you genuine depth in visual analysis and historical reasoning alike. You will learn to analyse the history, context, style, and meaning of images and objects, developing visual literacy and engaging with different critical and theoretical frameworks. At the same time you will develop the skills of the historian: evaluating evidence, constructing arguments, and situating events and artworks in their broader political, social, and cultural contexts.

The programme includes a year abroad, providing the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and encounter art and history from a different national vantage point.

You will engage with how visual culture has both reflected and shaped human history and experience, examining the complex roles that art, its display, and its reception play in questions of aesthetics, politics, power, and identity.

Graduates move into careers in museums and galleries, auction houses, cultural policy, heritage, education, publishing, journalism, and the art market. Many continue to postgraduate study in art history, museum studies, or history.
