About this course

Biological Sciences is one of the broadest and most dynamic of the science disciplines, encompassing the study of living organisms from the molecular and cellular level to ecosystems and the biosphere as a whole. It draws on genetics, biochemistry, physiology, ecology, evolutionary biology and microbiology to understand the fundamental principles of life and their application in medicine, agriculture, environmental management and biotechnology. The field is advancing rapidly, driven by new sequencing technologies, data science methods and a growing understanding of how biological systems work at every scale.

At Heriot-Watt University this four-year full-time degree offers both breadth and flexibility, with specialist pathways available in cell and molecular biology, human health and microbiology, as well as the option to remain on a broad, interdisciplinary programme that allows you to explore the full range of the biological sciences. The pathway structure means you can decide which direction best suits your career ambitions and switch within the first two years as your interests develop. The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop your scientific education in an international research environment.

Graduates from Biological Sciences degrees go on to careers across the life sciences, healthcare, environmental management and biotechnology sectors. Many find roles in pharmaceutical research, clinical laboratory science, environmental consultancy, agricultural research, conservation and science communication. Others pursue postgraduate study in areas such as molecular biology, genetics, ecology, microbiology, medicine or related health sciences.

The scientific rigour, laboratory skills and analytical thinking the degree develops are valued across a growing range of sectors as biological science becomes central to some of the most significant challenges in healthcare, food security and sustainability.
