About this course

Business law occupies a practical and intellectually rich territory where legal principle meets commercial reality. Every business transaction, from a simple contract to a complex corporate merger, is governed by legal rules, and understanding those rules is essential to anyone who wants to practise law in a commercial context, work in corporate governance, or contribute to regulatory and compliance functions within organisations. At Swansea University, the LLB Business Law is a three-year full-time programme that prepares graduates specifically for careers at the intersection of law and business, as the current description accurately notes.

The degree covers the foundational areas of English law, including contract, tort, and constitutional and administrative law, while placing particular emphasis on the legal framework within which businesses operate. You will study company law, commercial law, competition law, employment law, and the regulation of financial services and markets, as well as areas such as intellectual property and international trade law that are increasingly important in a globalised commercial environment. The programme develops your ability to read and interpret legal authorities precisely, construct arguments from principle, and apply legal reasoning to practical commercial problems.

Legal method and research are taught as explicit skills, alongside the professional communication abilities that a legal career requires.

Graduates of business law programmes are well placed for a range of career paths. The Legal Practice Course or the Solicitors Qualifying Examination leads to qualification as a solicitor, with business law graduates particularly attractive to firms specialising in commercial, corporate, financial, or employment law. Others move into in-house legal roles within companies, or into compliance, regulatory affairs, and governance positions that do not require full legal qualification but benefit enormously from legal knowledge.

Some graduates go on to postgraduate study, including master's degrees in commercial law, corporate law, or international business law. The programme is also a strong foundation for careers in banking, insurance, trade, and public administration where an understanding of the legal framework governing business activity is genuinely valuable.

Highly recommend
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable …

Exceeded expectations
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship one…
