About this course

Business management is a discipline that takes the organisation as its central subject of study, asking how firms and institutions make decisions, allocate resources, lead people, and adapt to changing environments. What distinguishes the approach at the University of Southampton is its interdisciplinary depth: this degree draws from economics, history, and the social sciences, offering a genuinely different perspective from the more purely vocational programmes found elsewhere. Understanding business through these lenses means engaging with the social and historical forces that have shaped markets and organisations, not just with the tools of management itself.

This four-year full-time programme incorporates a study abroad year, giving you the opportunity to spend time at a partner institution overseas. The experience of studying in a different educational and cultural context adds an international dimension to your thinking about business and organisations, and is an increasingly valued signal to graduate employers. You will engage with strategy, marketing, organisational behaviour, economics, finance, and the broader social and political contexts in which businesses operate.

The interdisciplinary approach means you will read and engage with ideas from a wider range of sources than a standard business degree, developing the kind of critical and analytical intelligence that is genuinely hard to teach.

Graduates of business management programmes go on to a wide range of careers in the private, public, and third sectors. Management roles, consultancy, financial services, marketing, operations, and entrepreneurship are all common destinations. The analytical and communicative skills the Southampton programme develops are particularly valued by employers who want graduates who can think carefully as well as act decisively.

Postgraduate study in business, management, or related social sciences is also an option for those wishing to specialise or pursue research.

Highly recommend
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” good transpor…

Would do it again
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the accounting and finance streams are taught by practitioners, not just academics. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” t…
