About this course

Civil engineering shapes the physical environment in which we live. Roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water treatment plants, coastal defences, railways, and the foundations of buildings are all the work of civil engineers, who design, construct, and maintain the infrastructure that societies depend on. The discipline combines physics and mathematics with materials science, geotechnics, hydraulics, structural analysis, and project management, and it demands the ability to work at scales ranging from the behaviour of individual materials to the coordination of vast construction programmes.

At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, reflecting both the global nature of civil engineering practice and the value of experiencing how infrastructure challenges are approached in different national contexts. You will build a thorough grounding in engineering science before specialising in the sub-disciplines that make up modern civil engineering. Structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics and hydrology, transportation engineering, and construction management will all feature as you develop the technical breadth the profession requires.

Edinburgh's research environment is exceptionally strong in areas such as infrastructure sustainability and geotechnical engineering, and you will benefit from that expertise throughout the programme.

The degree develops your ability to model physical systems quantitatively, to identify failure modes before they occur, and to make decisions that balance performance, cost, safety, and environmental impact. Computing tools, including finite element analysis and building information modelling, are integral to modern civil engineering practice, and you will develop competence with these as part of your studies. Communication and project management skills are developed alongside the technical content.

Graduates in civil engineering work across the full range of infrastructure sectors, from transportation and water to energy and urban development. Major engineering consultancies, construction companies, government agencies, and international development organisations all recruit civil engineers. The year abroad adds an international dimension to your record that is increasingly valued by global firms.

Further study at masters level, and eventually chartership through professional bodies such as the Institution of Civil Engineers, marks the typical progression into senior engineering practice.
