About this course

Commercial law governs the legal framework within which business is conducted, covering the rules that regulate contracts, companies, finance, intellectual property, competition, and the countless transactions through which economic activity takes place. It is the law of the marketplace, and understanding it is indispensable for anyone who wants to practise as a lawyer in a business context, to work in-house in a commercial organisation, or to understand the regulatory environment in which business operates. Commercial law combines doctrinal rigour with direct relevance to the real decisions organisations face.

At Coventry this four-year programme includes a foundation year at the start, making it accessible to students who may not meet the standard entry requirements for direct admission to the main degree but who have the potential to succeed with appropriate preparation. The full programme also includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, meaning you have multiple opportunities to gain professional and international experience alongside your legal study. You will examine the legal principles that underpin business activities, covering company law, contract, commercial transactions, financial regulation, consumer protection, and competition law, alongside the broader legal and ethical frameworks within which commercial activity takes place.

Commercial law graduates are sought after by law firms, particularly those specialising in corporate and commercial practice, as well as by the legal departments of financial institutions, banks, multinational corporations, and regulatory bodies. The degree is a strong foundation for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination route, and many graduates pursue careers as solicitors in corporate and commercial specialisms. Others move into compliance, contract management, legal operations, and advisory roles in business contexts where legal knowledge is valued without formal practice as a solicitor.

Postgraduate study in commercial law, corporate governance, or financial regulation is also available for those who wish to develop a specialist expertise.
