About this course

Computer science is the discipline that studies how computation works, how algorithms can be designed and analysed, and how software systems are built to be reliable, secure, and efficient. It combines theoretical rigour with practical creativity, demanding both the mathematical precision to understand what computers can and cannot do and the programming skill to build systems that solve real problems. As digital technology becomes ever more central to every aspect of modern life, the demand for people with strong computer science foundations continues to grow across virtually every industry.

At Robert Gordon University you will study this four-year full-time degree, which includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement. That combination of professional and international experience is central to the programme's ethos, connecting your academic training to the real-world software engineering and systems challenges that employers face. You will develop knowledge and skills spanning algorithms, programming languages, software engineering, computer architecture, databases, networks, artificial intelligence, and the methods needed to design and implement state-of-the-art software systems.

RGU is a university with a strong applied and professional orientation, and the degree is designed to produce graduates who can contribute effectively in industry from the outset.

Computer science graduates from RGU find work across the technology sector and far beyond it. Software engineering, systems architecture, data science, cybersecurity, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation roles are all direct applications of the degree. Financial services, energy, healthcare, defence, and public sector organisations are major employers of computing graduates in Scotland and across the UK.

The placement year and work experience typically strengthen connections to specific employers, and many graduates secure graduate roles with their placement organisation. Postgraduate study in computer science, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, or data science is also an option for those who wish to specialise.

Would do it again
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cost of living …

A great decision
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local cost of…
