About this course

Creative writing and history might seem like an unlikely pairing, but they share a deep concern with narrative, with how stories are told, by whom and to what effect. History asks what really happened and why it matters; creative writing asks how those events can be given form, voice and meaning through literature. Studying both at Liverpool Hope University places you in a city with a distinctive literary and cultural heritage, learning from writers and historians who are active researchers and practitioners in their fields.

The programme runs for three years full-time and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, making it one of the most practically and internationally enriched combinations available for writers and historians at this level.

In the creative writing strand, you will develop your skills across a range of forms including fiction, poetry, life writing and script, reading widely to understand how craft choices produce their effects and writing regularly to test and develop your own voice. The history component grounds you in the methods and debates of historical enquiry, examining how evidence is gathered, interpreted and contested, and how historical understanding changes over time. Together, the disciplines sharpen both your analytical reading and your ability to give ideas expressive form.

A typical tariff of around 88 points is expected, making the programme accessible to students from a variety of educational backgrounds.

Graduates from creative writing and history degrees pursue careers in publishing, journalism, education, heritage, arts management, broadcast media and public history. The writing and research skills you develop have wide application, and many graduates work across multiple fields simultaneously, combining professional writing with roles in education or the cultural sector. Further study in creative writing, history or related disciplines is a well-travelled path for those who wish to deepen their expertise or pursue academic or archival careers.
