About this course

Creative Writing is the discipline of making literature with intention and craft, shaping language into forms that communicate, resonate and endure. It is both an art and a practice, requiring imagination and the willingness to take creative risks alongside the technical mastery of form, voice, structure and revision that distinguishes accomplished writing from raw expression. A university programme in Creative Writing develops both dimensions, immersing you in the reading and analysis of literary works while also giving you sustained practice in making your own.

At Brunel University London, this three-year full-time BA is designed to inspire high levels of creativity, initiative and originality across the range of creative writing forms. You will write in multiple modes, developing your practice in fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and potentially scriptwriting or other forms, and you will engage with the critical and theoretical questions that serious literary work raises. The programme encourages interdisciplinary thinking, with opportunities to develop projects that cross the boundaries between writing and other creative and analytical disciplines.

London's position as the centre of the UK publishing, broadcasting and literary scenes provides a rich professional context for your studies, with ready access to literary events, agencies, publishers and creative organisations.

Graduates of Creative Writing degrees pursue careers across a wide range of fields. Publishing, journalism, copywriting, content creation, scriptwriting, education, arts administration, and community arts are all well-established routes. Many graduates develop as independent writers, combining creative work with other professional roles in the manner typical of literary careers.

The skills in close reading, precise writing, creative problem-solving and independent thinking that the degree develops are valued across many professional contexts beyond the arts. Postgraduate study in creative writing, English, or journalism is a natural next step for those who want to deepen their craft or develop research interests.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: access to facilities (workshop, equipment, specialist software) is genuinely first-rate. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good tr…

This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cos…
