About this course

Ecology and conservation is a discipline concerned with understanding the diversity of life on Earth, the ecological relationships that sustain it, and the science and practice of protecting it in an era of unprecedented environmental change. Ecology examines how organisms interact with their environments and with each other, how populations grow and decline, how communities of species are structured, and how energy and nutrients flow through ecosystems. Conservation biology applies this knowledge to the urgent challenge of maintaining biodiversity in the face of habitat loss, climate change, invasive species, and overexploitation, developing the scientific basis for decisions about what to protect, how, and why.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year BSc includes a broad foundation in biology before moving into specialist content covering the ecology of terrestrial and aquatic environments, the process of evolution and speciation, adaptive physiology of plants and animals, population biology, molecular ecology, biodiversity, sustainability, and conservation. You will engage with both the science of ecology and the applied dimensions of conservation, developing the quantitative and fieldwork skills needed to work as a practising ecologist or conservation scientist.

The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to work in a different ecological context and to gain experience of conservation issues and approaches in another country. St Andrews's research strengths in ecology and biodiversity and its location in Scotland's diverse natural landscapes provide a rich context for fieldwork-based learning.

Graduates pursue careers in ecological survey and consultancy, conservation management for NGOs and government agencies, environmental impact assessment, national parks and nature reserves, research in universities and institutes, and policy roles in environmental governance. Many go on to postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, environmental science, or related fields, and doctoral research is a common route for those who wish to pursue academic or leading research careers.

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” good transport links ma…

Would do it again
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you sh…
