About this course

Entrepreneurship and business is a degree for students who want to understand both the commercial landscape they will enter and the mindset and skills needed to create something new within it. Entrepreneurship is not simply about starting companies: it is a way of identifying opportunities, managing uncertainty, building teams, and taking ideas from concept to reality in conditions where nothing is guaranteed. Business provides the analytical frameworks, commercial knowledge and management skills that make entrepreneurship sustainable rather than speculative.

At the University of Portsmouth you will study this combination in one of the UK's most entrepreneurially active cities, with access to the university's own startup support infrastructure alongside your academic programme. You will engage with core business disciplines alongside the theory and practice of entrepreneurship, new venture creation, innovation, and the management of growing enterprises. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial professional experience and international perspective alongside your academic development.

The sandwich year in particular allows you to spend a significant period in a real business or entrepreneurial environment, testing and extending what you are learning.

Graduates of entrepreneurship and business enter an exceptionally wide range of careers. Starting or joining early-stage companies, working in innovation roles within larger organisations, entering management consultancy, or building expertise in a business function and using that as a platform for entrepreneurial activity are all common paths. The skills the degree develops, including commercial analysis, strategic thinking, creativity, resilience, and the ability to communicate and persuade, are valued across every sector.

Postgraduate study in business, entrepreneurship, or innovation management is an option for those who wish to develop their knowledge further. For students with ambitions to create, build and lead, this programme provides both the knowledge and the mindset to pursue them.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: case-based teaching forces you to think commercially. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to…

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you sh…
