About this course

Environmental science is the interdisciplinary study of the natural environment and the complex ways in which human activity interacts with it. It draws on ecology, chemistry, geology, hydrology, geography and policy science to understand processes including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, land use change and the sustainability of natural resources. Environmental scientists are essential contributors to the evidence base that informs policy, planning and management decisions with environmental consequences.

At Hartpury University, this four-year programme includes a foundation year that provides an alternative route into degree-level study, ideal for those who need to build subject-specific knowledge and skills before progressing to the full BSc qualification. Once on the main degree, you will develop a thorough understanding of environmental processes, ecological systems and the human drivers of environmental change, alongside the fieldwork, laboratory and analytical skills needed to monitor and assess environmental conditions. A sandwich placement year provides extended professional experience in an environmental context, and work placement opportunities throughout the programme connect your academic study to real organisations working on environmental challenges.

Hartpury's setting provides access to a range of natural environments for field-based learning.

Environmental science graduates work in environmental consultancy, ecological surveying, government environmental agencies, conservation organisations, water and resource management, local authority planning and environmental management, and international organisations working on sustainability and climate. Many pursue postgraduate study in environmental science, ecology, environmental management or a specialist applied field such as climate adaptation or biodiversity assessment. The foundation year route extends access to the degree to students who might otherwise not have met standard entry requirements, providing a genuine pathway into a field with strong and growing demand for scientific expertise.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: access to facilities (workshop, equipment, specialist software) is genuinely first-rate. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student…
