About this course

Ethical hacking and cyber security is one of the most practically focused areas of computer science, concerned with identifying vulnerabilities in systems and networks before malicious actors can exploit them. Ethical hackers, often known as penetration testers or red team specialists, use the same techniques as attackers but under authorisation and with the goal of improving security. Cyber security more broadly encompasses the design of secure systems, the management of digital risk, digital forensics, and the governance and legal frameworks that surround information security.

As organisations of all kinds depend more heavily on digital infrastructure, the demand for professionals who can protect it has never been higher.

At Coventry University this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing you with the foundational technical knowledge needed to engage with the degree-level content that follows. You will study the principles of network security, operating systems, cryptography, ethical hacking methodologies, and digital forensics, building practical skills through hands-on laboratory work and simulated environments. The course includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement component, giving you significant professional experience in cyber security settings before you graduate.

The typical entry tariff of 56 points reflects the broad access route that the foundation year creates.

You will develop technical proficiency in security tools and techniques alongside the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to assess, test, and improve complex security architectures. Equally important are the ethical and legal frameworks you will study, since working in this field requires a clear understanding of where professional responsibility lies.

Graduates work as penetration testers, security analysts, cyber security consultants, digital forensics investigators, and security engineers across the public and private sectors. Postgraduate study and professional certifications are common next steps for those looking to specialise further.
