About this course

Events and tourism management is a degree that addresses two of the world's largest and most dynamic service industries. Events, spanning conferences and trade shows to festivals, sporting events and cultural programmes, are a significant sector of the economy and an important mechanism through which businesses, communities and nations connect and communicate. Tourism is one of the most globally significant economic activities, shaping the development of destinations, the livelihoods of millions of workers and the cultural and environmental impact of visitor flows on places and communities.

At the University of the West of Scotland, this part-time programme allows you to develop your knowledge and skills in events and tourism management while managing other professional or personal commitments. This is particularly relevant for students who are already working in the hospitality, events or tourism sector and want to formalise and develop their expertise alongside their careers. Part-time study allows you to draw on professional experience as a resource in your academic learning, enriching both.

You will develop your understanding of event planning and operations, tourism strategy and destination management, marketing in the visitor economy, sustainable tourism practice and the commercial and operational dimensions of managing events and tourism businesses. The programme develops both analytical and practical management skills that are relevant across the sector.

Graduates work in event management companies, conference and exhibition centres, venues and hotels, tourist boards and destination management organisations, airlines, cruise lines, tour operators and arts and cultural organisations. Career roles include event coordinator, project manager, tourism development officer, conference and banqueting manager, and marketing roles within the visitor economy. Postgraduate study in events management or tourism is a natural option for those who want to develop their expertise further.
